Our new motto this year for our homestead is “wh Our new motto this year for our homestead is “whatever works!” My husband found this small deer feeder on clearance at Tractor Supply and is using it as an automatic chicken feeder. It has a timer to automatically feed up to 20 seconds, four times a day. Let’s see how the chickens (and ducks) like it…

I still have one section left to do once I replace I still have one section left to do once I replace the weed fabric on that side with quick-plant fabric to match the rest of the tunnel. Having the pre-burned 2 x 18 holes makes it so easy to use the drill auger to have the entire tunnel ready to plant in! I love this spacing for our tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, herbs, etc. I may switch one of the rows to the 4 x 8 spacing during fall/winter for our lettuces, etc! This will be our second season using the quick-plant fabric from Farmers Friend and it does an amazing job at keeping the grass and weeds away, and my aisles clear. I absolutely recommend it (they are also available in 1 x 18, 3 x 10 & 4 x 8 pre-burned and at various lengths: 12ft, 50ft, 315ft & 525ft). Now I’m just waiting for our last frost date to pass so I can get this baby filled up with food that will feed many 🌱 This tunnel looks bleak and dreary right now, but soon it’ll be brimming with life 💚 What are you growing this spring? @farmersfriendllc #caterpillartunnel #growyourownfood #homestead #gardening
Watching SEVEN grow up has been the most joyful ex Watching SEVEN grow up has been the most joyful experience on our homestead. This big fella has always been so gentle and loving. He demands head and neck scratches, has an obvious adoration for his “milk daddy” (my husband was primarily the one who bottle fed him as a calf, so they have the strongest bond ever, even 2+ years later), and has such a curious personality. Our emu is his best friend, and he’s very focal when he wants to play!! Our homestead is going to feel so empty when he leaves. I honestly don’t know how we are going to adjust. He’s been such a HUGE part of our family these last few years. But, it’s time. My husband called the butcher and scheduled his date and made the deposit. We are going to love on him tremendously for the few months we have left with him before he blesses us with so much beef. Homesteading isn’t easy. But I’m thankful every day that the Lord led my family to this lifestyle, of raising our own meat, so we know how the animals were treated and what they were fed. It gives us more of an appreciation for the food that nourishes our bodies. Mornings like this just make my mama heart happy. Mornings like this just make my mama heart happy. He picked up his book and started reading without having to be told to. I love homeschooling because my kids are in an environment where they are comfortable and we don’t have to rush through lessons. He read two chapters, put his bookmark in, then took the dog out for a walk in the woods but came back in carrying a huge piece of ice from the pond! When he’s had enough outdoor time, he can start his ELA and Math but I guarantee he will take a break between those to go help Dad with some work outside! Oh, and he caught a bunch of salamanders yesterday and made a “SALAMANDERS 4 SALE” sign that he wants to go put at the end of the driveway to make some $$$ off these “rare” salamanders. Cool, kid!!! Do your thang!!!! My girls just decided to take a break from their schoolwork and go join him. So long as they complete their assignments and chores before dinner time/dance/sports/etc, I don’t regulate their time. They get to make their own decisions about when/how they spend their “school” day. It’s just what works for us, and I love it.
