How to Make Fire Cider: Benefits, Uses & a FREE Fire Cider Guide

If you’ve been searching for how to make Fire Cider at home, you’re in the right place.

Fire Cider is one of those old-fashioned homestead preparations that checks so many boxes for me: it’s simple to make, uses ingredients you may already have in your kitchen or garden, can be customized to your family’s tastes, and is another opportunity to become just a little more self-sufficient.

It’s also got some serious kick!

Made by steeping ingredients like garlic, ginger, onions, hot peppers, turmeric, lemon, horseradish, and herbs in raw apple cider vinegar, Fire Cider is a spicy herbal vinegar tonic that has become especially popular during the fall and winter months.

Here at Freedom Forest Farm, Fire Cider has become one of those homemade staples we enjoy making and keeping around — so much so that I created an entire FREE Guide to Making & Enjoying Fire Cider to help you make your own.

But if you’re wondering what Fire Cider is, why people make it, and what in the world you’re supposed to do with it once it’s finished, let’s start there.

What Is Fire Cider?

Fire Cider is essentially a spicy infused apple cider vinegar tonic.

You combine raw apple cider vinegar with a mixture of fresh roots, vegetables, peppers, citrus, herbs, and spices and allow everything to steep for several weeks. After steeping, the solids are strained away and the finished Fire Cider can be enjoyed as-is or sweetened with honey.

And here’s one of my favorite things about making homemade Fire Cider: There isn’t just one way to make it. Once you understand the basic method, you can experiment. We sometimes add orange slices and herbs such as rosemary, thyme, or oregano to ours. You can adjust the peppers depending on how much heat you want or play around with other ingredients and flavors. That’s part of the fun of making things yourself!

Why Make Your Own Fire Cider?

Of course, you can buy Fire Cider already made. But making your own allows you to know exactly what’s going into your jar and adjust it to suit your family. Want more ginger? Add it. Prefer a citrusy flavor? Try orange. Don’t want your Fire Cider quite so fiery? Choose a milder pepper. Have fresh herbs growing in the garden? Experiment!

That’s one of the things I love most about the homesteading lifestyle. Every new skill gives us another opportunity to rely a little less on something premade and learn how to create it ourselves. You don’t have to live on 100 acres or grow every ingredient yourself to practice self-sufficiency. Sometimes it starts with a Mason jar on your kitchen counter.

What’s in Homemade Fire Cider?

Recipes vary, but traditional homemade Fire Cider ingredients commonly include some combination of:

  • Raw apple cider vinegar
  • Garlic
  • Fresh ginger
  • Onion
  • Hot peppers
  • Lemon
  • Turmeric
  • Horseradish
  • Honey
  • Herbs and other optional additions

Each ingredient contributes its own flavor and characteristics.

Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is the base that brings everything together. For our homemade Fire Cider, I prefer raw, unfiltered and unpasteurized apple cider vinegar with the “mother.” It gives Fire Cider its signature tang while providing the acidic environment used to infuse all of those other wonderful ingredients.

Garlic, Ginger & Onion

These kitchen staples are a big part of what gives Fire Cider its strong, unmistakable flavor. Ginger provides warmth and spice, garlic brings its characteristic pungency, and onion adds another layer to the finished tonic. They’re also ingredients that have been valued in traditional food and wellness practices for generations.

Hot Peppers

Here’s where the FIRE comes in! You can customize the heat level depending on the peppers you choose. A jalapeno can provide a more manageable kick, while something like a habanero turns up the heat considerably. Hot peppers also contain capsaicin, the compound responsible for their heat.

Lemon & Turmeric

Lemon adds a bright citrus flavor that helps balance some of the heavier, pungent ingredients. Turmeric adds its gorgeous golden color and has become a popular ingredient in natural wellness recipes because of the compounds it contains, including curcumin.

Horseradish

Horseradish is optional in our recipe, but if you like some serious bite, it’s a great addition. Between horseradish, ginger, garlic, and hot peppers, you’ll definitely understand how Fire Cider got its name!

Honey

Honey comes later.

After your Fire Cider has finished steeping and you’ve strained away the solids, you can decide whether you want to sweeten it. Some people love the fiery, tangy flavor exactly as it is. Others — especially kids — may appreciate a little honey to balance all that vinegar and heat. Start with a little. You can always add more!

What Are the Potential Benefits of Fire Cider?

Fire Cider has long been enjoyed as part of traditional and herbal wellness practices, particularly during cold-weather months.

Many of its ingredients — including ginger, garlic, turmeric, hot peppers, honey, and apple cider vinegar — have also been individually studied for various nutritional and wellness properties.

That doesn’t mean Fire Cider is a medicine or a cure for illness.

Instead, I like to think of it as another way to incorporate traditional, whole-food ingredients into our family’s routine. It’s spicy. It’s warming. It’s packed with flavor. And making it ourselves fits beautifully with the more natural and self-sufficient lifestyle we’re working toward here at Freedom Forest Farm.

How Long Does Fire Cider Need to Steep?

This is one homestead project that requires a little patience. Once you’ve chopped, grated, and prepared your ingredients, they’re placed into a glass jar and covered completely with raw apple cider vinegar.

Then comes the hard part: Waiting.

We allow our Fire Cider to steep in a cool, dark location for approximately 2–4 weeks, giving the jar a shake each day. Over time, you’ll notice the color, aroma, and flavor begin to change as everything infuses into the vinegar.

Once it’s ready, you’ll strain away the solids and decide whether you’d like to add honey.

My FREE Fire Cider eBook walks you through this entire process step-by-step, including preparing the ingredients, layering your jar, steeping, straining, sweetening, and storing your finished Fire Cider.

How Do You Use Fire Cider?

Here’s where things get fun. One of the biggest misconceptions about Fire Cider is that it has to sit in the pantry waiting until cold and flu season. It doesn’t! Fire Cider is also a flavorful infused vinegar, which means there are all kinds of ways to incorporate it into your kitchen.

Enjoy a Small Amount

Some people enjoy a small amount of Fire Cider by itself, while others prefer to dilute it with water. Because vinegar is highly acidic, diluting it can also make it much easier to drink. Me? I just take a shot each day, all season long. My kids take a tablespoon each day. They actually enjoy the flavor!

Make Fire Cider Salad Dressing

This is such an easy way to use homemade Fire Cider. Mix it with olive oil, honey, herbs, and your favorite seasonings to create a spicy homemade vinaigrette.

Use It in Marinades

The acidity and bold flavor make Fire Cider a fun addition to marinades for meats and vegetables. You’ve already got garlic, onion, peppers, ginger, herbs, citrus, and vinegar packed into one ingredient!

Add It to Soups & Stews

Try adding a small splash to soups, chili, beans, or stews. The acidity can brighten a dish while adding a little warmth and spice.

Make a Warm Fire Cider Drink

Mix a little Fire Cider into warm water with honey for a spicy, warming drink — especially when the weather turns cold.

Get Creative!

Once you make it, experiment. Use it anywhere a spicy vinegar might work and see what you come up with. That’s part of learning to cook and create from what you have.

When Is the Best Time to Make Fire Cider?

You can make Fire Cider any time of year, but late summer and fall are perfect times to start a batch. Gardens and farmers markets may still be overflowing with peppers and herbs, while cooler weather is right around the corner. And because Fire Cider needs a few weeks to steep, starting before cold weather arrives means your batch will be ready when fall and winter are in full swing.

It’s also a great project if you’re looking for fall homesteading ideas, traditional homestead skills, homemade pantry staples, or ways to preserve and use your garden harvest.

Fire Cider & the Homesteading Lifestyle

For me, making Fire Cider represents something bigger than what’s inside the jar. It’s another skill. Another thing we can learn to make ourselves. Another way to use ingredients from the garden, farmers market, local growers, or simply the grocery store more intentionally.

Homesteading doesn’t have to mean doing everything from scratch.

It’s about learning, experimenting, becoming more resourceful, and discovering how much we’re capable of doing ourselves. Sometimes that means growing a garden. Sometimes it’s preserving a harvest. Sometimes it’s raising animals. And sometimes it’s chopping garlic, ginger, peppers, and herbs and stuffing them into a Mason jar full of apple cider vinegar.

It all counts.
